Product Description
Purple Pitcher Plant Sarracenia purpurea, The Purple Pitcher Plant is definitely the easiest of all the carnivorous plants to grow and is excellent for beginners. Range You will find these carnivorous plants throughout the southeastern and well into the northeastern parts of the United States, as well as into much of eastern and central Canada, where winter temperatures can go well below freezing. Sarracenia purpurea are hardy, zone 7-8. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 10-20 degrees F. Where to Grow Best grown outdoors as a container or potted plant. Excellent for the sunny deck or patio. You may also grow them in a pond or a home bog garden. Because of their specific soil requirement, avoid planting them in the ground. Sunlight Grow these carnivorous plants in full sun, with a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight for vigorous growth. Water Keep the pot in standing water to keep the soil wet at all times. Use mineral-free water for best results. If growing your carnivorous plants in a pond, keep the water level halfway on the pot. Avoid drowning the crown of the plant.

  Great Plant!   June 13, 2008

I ordered two of the Purple Pitchers and they arrived very quickly and in excellent condition. After only a couple of weeks they are growing new pitchers. The color of the plant is amazing with the contrasting veins and dark red color of the pitchers. I would recommend the purchase of a good book about growing carnivorous plants to help with any questions you may have but more importantly to make sure you are growing the plant properly. Excellent service and merchandise from Hirt's.

The plant I got was larger than what I expected! Usually carnivorous plants I order are sent as tiny seedlings; this was large enough that after a week or so I felt I could feed it, I put a cricket in one of the pitchers and now there are new ones sprouting like mad! Some of the new pitchers are already longer than the originals; this is a wonderful buy for anyone even mildly interested in carnivorous plants.
