I bought this soundtrack for the cool music heard during the suspenseful parts of the film. After sorting it out, I've come to the conclusion that there are only three tracks listeners are really looking for. The three most identiful tracks are #1 Main Title, #7 Ice Pick Mike, and #9 Shifting Gears. These are the three that are the most recognizable. Don't get me wrong, it's worth the cost just to have these three, but the rest of the cd contains the jazzy riffs you hear throughout the movie. Which by themselves aren't necessarily bad, but it's the three I list that are the cream of the soundtrack, and what most people remember from the movie. So get the soundtrack if you love Bullitt, but just cue up those three tracks, you won't be sorry.

A 1968 Version by Lalo Schifrin - BUT NOT THE ORIGINAL ONE!!   April 18, 2003

I bought this cd because I thought it was the original film version of the great soundtrack you hear in the movie. Instead of that the cd has ANOTHER version recorded in 1968 by Lalo Schifrin.

It is a great recording (and I like it very much) but it has very little to do with what you hear in the movie. The main title (for example) is very different: it is faster and it does not have the same rhythmical nuances of the film version (in the movie, sometimes the music stops and we only hear the rhythm... and the rhythm keeps changing - it is great!). On this cd, the music seems re-written in a compacted version.

If you did not see the movie or if you do not care for the original version, buy this cd - it is the best version available (since the true original film score is not available). But I loved the film version and cannot accept this one.

That's why I got disappointed.

Like "Psycho" and "Rear Window", "Bullitt" is one of those original soundtracks yet to be seen. I just hope someday someone will release it (like they did with "Blade Runner" years leter). Don't get me wrong: this cd is great but cannot match the real thing.

This is the version of this soundtrack to get.
The soundtrack has been re-recorded and released in 2000 on Aleph records with Lalo Schifrin. It is good, but does not kick the way this original does. The original soundtrack score was never released, this release is the jazzier version for record release from 1968. The reason Lalo re-recorded this work in 2000 was to offer both the film version and the record vesion all on one CD. So buy the 2000 release if you are a die hard. But start with this 1968 release.

Triggered by the title song I ordered this CD. Most of the songs are fine, some of them are even to cool to be true (Title Tune, Ice Pick Mike). Nevertheless, i suspect that some of the songs will get slightly boring after a while. Still, the ones that stand out will do so for a very long time

The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because there were a few songs I didn't really care for. I have been trying to get a copy for a long time just for the cut "Song For Cathy", and the music leading up to the car chase, you'll hear the burning of rubber when it finishes! Great CD!
