Amazon.com The "gold" of the title refers to an elusive pirate's booty, but it just as easily could mean the sun-washed glistening shores of Florida, or the sumptuously tanned bodies of its appealing stars, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. The whole film is awash in golden highlights, and the scenery and cinematography make the experience akin to taking a tropical holiday. Hudson and McConaughey reprise the chemistry they first exhibited in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, sparking and tangling and kvetching, while all the while the audience knows, of course, they adore each other and are perfect for each other. McConaughey is a dreamer, on the trail of a sunken pirate's treasure, and Hudson his now-ex-wife, a historian who prefers life to be a little more sedate. McConaughey, as Finn, delivers impassioned speeches to Hudson, as Tess, saying, "You want history? It's in the ocean, lady!" Before you can say Romancing the Stone, Tess and Finn are grudgingly reunited in search of the booty. If the plot doesn't contain many surprises, the froth of the stars' chemistry is amiable and makes for a perfect date movie. Scuba divers may find McConaughey's antics below the surface to be wildly unbelievable and usually fatal, but in the end viewers will root for him to surface, and recapture the heart of his lady love. --A.T. Not what I expected. August 9, 2008 mayflower (BFE North, Ca. United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie was so-so. I watched it on a plane and although it had me captured at first-Matthew and his fantastic body!- I somehow fell asleep through half of it. Now I was tired, but even so, if it was exciting enough-although the history lesson they provided was interesting-it should have kept me awake. I have to say that I'm not that upset that I missed a lot of it, because I quickly caught up in the end-with Matthew landing a plane in the water, a talent he never possessed, which it proved because it also crashed. Kinda bland, kinda silly. Overall, hum-drum!
Really enjoyed the show! August 7, 2008 Jeanne M. Pizza (Lutherville, MD USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
DVD's that I order from Amazon always arrive in excellent condition. This one was no exception. We watched it right away.
Happy-Go-Lucky, Leave-Your-Brains-At-The-Door Fun!! August 3, 2008 N. Crestani (Melbourne, Australia) Happy-Go-Lucky, Leave-Your-Brains-At-The-Door Fun!! I run decluttering and time management workshops for a living (inspiredhoney.com) and so I like to have a break once in a while and this breezy movie did it for me. Kate definitely channels her mum and actually Matthew seems to take a serious leaf from Kurt Russell's book. It's like Overboard for 2008 (Overboard is a must-see movie with Goldie Hawn & Kurt from the 1980s).

This movie was awful. The first movie in several years that has actually been painful to watch.
I did not like this movie! July 30, 2008 katieb (Oregon) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had low expectations for this movie in the first place, (A friend chose it). I do like both actors, but Mathew's tan body was not enough to keep me interested for an hour and a half. boring and predictable.
